Pepito
There is a place where the light always feels a little softer.
Where the air holds still for just a second longer…
as if something gentle is passing through.
In that place, Pepito is not hiding.
He walks slowly at first.
Carefully.
As though the ground beneath him might disappear if he trusts it too quickly.
There was a time when the world felt like that to him. Too loud. Too sharp. Too uncertain to step into. He had come from a place where fear lived in his body. Where neglect had taught him to disappear. Where survival meant staying small, unseen, still. And for a while, that was the only way Pepito knew how to be. He would hide. Tucked away, out of reach. For months after his arrival at the rescue. Pepito was broken.

If you looked his way, he would vanish before your eyes could meet his. As if being seen was something dangerous.
But something in him didn’t close. Not completely. Because little by little, something shifted. Not all at once. Not in a way anyone could point to and say, this is the moment it changed. Just… small things.

A step forward that lasted a second longer than before.
A glance that didn’t turn into a bolt.
A quiet curiosity about the world beyond the edges of fear.
Until one day…
Pepito stepped out. And the world didn’t collapse.
So he stepped again.
And again.
And before anyone could quite believe it, he was everywhere. Out in the open. In the middle of it all. Soaking in every sound, every movement, every small piece of life he could find.

As if he had made a quiet decision:
If the world is here… I’m going to experience all of it.
He walked through it with wide eyes and an open heart.
Not because it had always been kind, but because he chose not to carry what came before into what came next.

Pepito's body was small.
Fragile, even.
And inside it, a heart that had already been through too much. A heart with a serious disease. A heart that, in more ways than one, wasn’t supposed to last.
And yet…
it did.
Not perfectly.
Not without its limits.
But with a kind of strength that didn’t make sense on paper.
A heart that kept going.
That kept loving.
That kept choosing affection and connection, again and again.
The way he would press his forehead against yours, eyes closed, completely still…
as if he had found the exact place he was meant to be.
As if time could pause there.
And maybe, in those moments, it did.
He smelled like warm corn chips and sunlight. Like something simple and comforting.
Like home.
Pepi wasn’t supposed to have much time. That’s what they said. Six months… maybe a year. His heart was too fragile. Too broken. But he stayed. He stayed longer than expected. As if he knew there was still more of the world he hadn’t seen yet. And he made sure he saw it.
Every walk. Every moment. Every cuddle.
Every small piece of life he could reach.
Five years, in a world he once thought he couldn’t step into.

And now…
he moves differently.
Quieter. Lighter. In a much safer place.
But still the same Pepito.
Still out there somewhere, exploring, soaking in the sun, choosing the world again and again. Not because it was always kind, but because he learned something along the way:
That even after everything,
you can still choose happy.
