When Your Heart Whispers, Listen

Every now and then, something quietly tugs at my sleeve.

Not with a loud announcement or a carefully thought-out plan… just a gentle feeling that says, “Paint this.”

This spring, that “something” was birds.

It was completely unexpected.

I’d never painted birds before, and I certainly hadn’t planned to start. Yet I couldn’t stop admiring them. I found myself noticing their tiny feathered bodies, their bright colours, the effortless ways they moved through the world, and the incredible amount of life bundled into something so wonderfully small.

Around that same time, I discovered the beautiful work of Lindsay Green. Her joyful birds and colourful florals felt exactly like the fresh spring breeze I had been searching for. I knew immediately that I wanted to learn from her. She didn’t simply teach me how to paint birds and flowers. She taught me how to really see them. These are some of my paintings from her classes.

Birds have a wonderful way of refusing to fit into neat little boxes. Their colours, patterns, and personalities are endlessly varied, and that gave me permission to be just as playful. Instead of worrying about painting them “correctly,” I found myself enjoying the freedom of creating birds that felt as though they had flown straight out of my own imagination.

The more I painted, the lighter I felt.

At a time when life felt heavy, these tiny feathered creatures somehow reminded me to lift my eyes, breathe a little deeper, and trust my instincts. It was almost as if, with every brushstroke, I borrowed a little bit of their freedom. They seemed to soar above the heaviness, and for a little while, they invited me to soar with them.

Perhaps the biggest lesson I learned was this:

Sometimes my subconscious already knows what my heart needs. I don’t always understand why I’m drawn to something. Sometimes I simply follow that quiet pull. The understanding often comes later.

Looking back now, I realize I wasn’t just fascinated by birds.

I’ve always been drawn to tiny, fragile souls.

For many years, I devoted my life to rescuing senior and special-needs dogs, especially the tiniest and most vulnerable among them. I also volunteered as a kitten feeder, caring for orphaned newborn kittens who were only hours or days old. Around-the-clock syringe feedings, sleepless nights, and countless tiny victories became part of everyday life. It was exhausting… and one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

Only later did I begin to see the thread that had been quietly stitching it all together. I noticed it in the abandoned senior dogs. I noticed it in the newborn kittens who couldn’t survive without help. I noticed it in birds.

Those little bird paintings became so much more than a creative exercise. They gave me permission to trust my curiosity, embrace a new direction, and discover another piece of my own artistic voice. More importantly, they reminded me that the most meaningful journeys often begin with a whisper instead of a plan.

If you’d like to see where that quiet whisper led, I’ve gathered my works inspired by this creative season below. Each one celebrates the beauty, wonder, and quiet resilience of these tiny feathered souls. I hope they bring a little lightness to your day and perhaps encourage you to follow one of those gentle nudges the next time your own heart whispers.

Thank you for walking through my little forest of stories with me.
